Obama's foreign policy: Piss off our allies

One of the great myths of the Bush presidency is that he alienated the world. The truth: He pissed off the right people (Iran, the despot coddlers of the U.N. and global despots in general ... and, of course, the global left). He had a great relationship with America's traditional allies — good enough to get a NATO force into the Afghanistan campaign. Britain, Australia, Japan and Korea, meanwhile, joined the war on terror with no hesitation. And the former Eastern Bloc loved Bush.

Obama on LenoObama on Tour: And they made a big deal about Bush's golf schedule.

It should also be noted that the lifeless political bodies of anti-American European leaders abound — in France and Germany, especially. (Yes. Spain is an exception, but Aznar was an early and loyal ally to Bush's government when smart people on this side of the pond said all of Europe was opposed to Bush.) Funny how these facts are never mentioned much by the left that trumped the "restore our respect in the world" meme. And let's not fail to mention the Dutch, as well as Colombia.

Anyway, Obama was going to fix all that. Regain America's reputation in world opinion and get "serious" with our enemies. It's funny what unfolds when you set out to "fix" a myth. Obama snubs Britain Prime Minister Gordon Brown. He sends Hillary to Russia with a ceremonial "reset" button that was a bad joke before the "best and brightest" of the new State Department screwed up the translation. And we coddle Syria and Iran while ....

Israeli Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi cut short his visit to Washington after getting an extraordinarily cool reception from the new U.S. administration.

Last year, Israeli Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi had no problem setting up meetings with top officials in the U.S. government.

On his current trip to Washington, Ashkenazi sought to meet the administration of President Barack Obama, but most officials were unavailable.

Didn't he get the memo? Obama's out of town. Conducting an embarrassing interview with Jay Leno is way more important than treating our greatest Middle East ally with respect. Oh, as for Russia? They respond to the "reset button" by buzzing the towers of our Navy's ships.

Obamateur Hour continues. Our president was unavailable to comment, as he was having makeup applied in the Tonight Show's green room.

Defending Obama's "Special Olympics" crack

Too much will be made of it. But something should be made of it, because ... well ... presidents should be more careful.

But it's going to be especially rich to see some of the lefty defenders of Obama who got down in the muck about Sarah Palin deciding to keep her Down Syndrome baby defend him now.

I guess that's to be expected.

Z's strawmen, redux

Let me know when you find anybody who defends the joke. Commenters on Kos diaries don't count.

Just out of curiosity, who on the left does count?

I'll defend it

No; really. The people who take offense are the same people who don't want me calling my Injun friends "Chief," or my old friends from the Equal Opportunity Program in college giving me the nickname "Token White." What a bunch of retards.

The longer I live, the less I fit.

He should not

have been there in the first place; should have been at work and if he is going to be there at least put on a tie. Just the other day I told my brother I played golf like Ray Charles; but I'm not the President Of the United States of America. However, I did only miss three in the first round and stay at a Holiday Inn Express. Wow he and I have the same quaifications for President.

A Sitting Pres Sitting on the Tonight Show...?

I agree, Hamilton... what would Johnny have said? Ever since Clinton on Arsenio... was there a precedent (hah) before that? ... ever since Clinton on Arsenio, presidential candidates on talk shows has been a slow festering plague... will all POTUS now be expected to make the talk-show circuit and post on you tube?

egad!

Poor argument (surprise, surprise)

I began reading this expecting to see a poor argument (since the title was at odds with everything I know), and I was not disappointed. You trot out a few right-wing talking points to support the contention that Bush was popular with our allies and Obama was not. The problem is that the talking points consist of anecdotes and minor snafus. Anyone following international politics knows that Obama is generally admired and respected by world leaders, whereas Bush was not. Moreover, Obama is wildly popular with the people of the world, whereas Bush is wildly unpopular.

Really, those of you in the far-right echo chamber need to step out and take a deep breath of this little thing called reality. Then maybe some decade you can claw back from the political limbo you've relegated yourselves to.
